EaP CSF Steering Committee and Belarusian National Platform React to the Lifting of Sanctions and Call for Talks between the Belarusian Government and Civil Society

Following the recent decision of the Council of the European Union to lift the EU sanctions on a number of Belarusian officials and the subsequent opening of new opportunities in EU-Belarus cooperation, the EaP CSF Steering Committee calls for the initiation of talks between the Belarusian authorities and the representatives of the Belarusian National Platform (BNP) on the establishment of the Belarusian Council of National Dialogue, which would bring the authorities together with a wide range of independent actors of Belarusian society to discuss ways of accelerating the country’s development.

The Belarusian Nationa Platform considers that the cancellation of the European Union’s (EU) restrictive measures against Belarusian officials sends a contradictory message to Belarusian society as Belarus has seen no real democratic change in the last five years.
