TORCH Newsletter

18 December 2015

Merry Christmas from TORCH!

This is our last newsletter for this year, but we look ahead to the launch of our Humanities and the Digital Age series in January, which opens with a headline event exploring What does it mean to be human in the digital age? We are also pleased to announce upcoming opportunities to engage with museums and collections, including the Bodleian Library and Ashmolean Museum. Please see below for details.

It has been a busy year, with new research projects, a jam-packed Humanities and Science headline series, and a wealth of collaborations. Below we share a brief overview of 2015 at TORCH. We will be in touch again in the New Year, but until then please visit our Facebook, Twitter and the news section of our website for regular updates from the TORCH hub. Thank you to all our researchers and collaborators for a great 2015 and best wishes for 2016!

Humanities and the Digital Age

What Does it Mean to be Human in the Digital Age? Thursday 21 January, 5.30pm, Maths Institute

In this opening event in the Humanities and the Digital Age series we bring together a panel of experts from across the Humanities and the cultural sector to examine how the digital age has shaped, and will continue to shape, the human experience and the Humanities.

We will be joined by Diane Lees (Director, Imperial War Museum Group), Emma Smith (Fellow and Tutor in English), Chris Fletcher (Professorial Fellow and Keeper of Special Collections at the Bodleian Library), and Tom Chatfield (author and broadcaster). The discussion will be chaired by Lynne Brindley (Master, Pembroke College).

There will be plenty of time for audience questions and discussion, which will be followed by a drinks reception. Free and all welcome. Please register below.

5 New Research Networks

We welcomed five new research networks in 2015: The Nordic NetworkFiction and Human RightsInheritance and CooperationThe Oxford Song Network, and The Long History of Identity, Ethnicity and Nationhood. They continue next year, so look out for opportunities to get involved. Visit the networks page for a full list of our research projects.

34 Early Career Researchers

Our Early Career community continues to grow, and this year we were delighted to welcome researchers working on a range of interdisciplinary projects, including our new joint TORCH-Pembroke College Career Development Fellow Imaobong Umoren who is researching African, African American, and Caribbean women’s history in the twentieth century, and Alice Kelly, our Postdoctoral Writing Fellow in the Women in Humanities programme.

Over 350 Events

Our research networks and programmes have held a range of events this year, including conferences on 'Émilie Du Châtelet', 'Dignity and the Novel', 'Prismatic Translation' and 'Phenomenology and Health'. We also held many public events, often in collaboration with museums and galleries, including an exhibition exploring Alzheimer's with the O3 gallery, a panel discussion on The Oxford Dodo with the Museum of Natural History and Being Human festival, and bite-size academic talks on death at the Ashmolean's LiveFriday.

Humanities and Science

In 2015-16 we explored the relationship between the Humanities and Sciences, showcasing many of the existing research projects in Oxford that already cross the disciplines, as well as providing an incubation space for new collaborative projects. With funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation we are pleased to be supporting two Humanities-Science Joint Doctoral Studentships exploring Childhood Maltreatment and Lifetime Resilience and The Mental and Material Laboratories of Thirteenth Century Science, and two Knowledge Exchange Partnerships with The Science Museum and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists
