March is always penguin moulting month, so we can check on the rare Hoiho - Yellow Eyed Penguins - as they moult and regrow their feathers. So why the turtles? Well, where we lived in Japan the loggerhead turtles came in to nest and lay their eggs in March too. We used to join the protection team and dig up the eggs before people or dogs could. The turtles are protected but people like to eat the eggs. There was a special protected enclosure where we reburied the eggs - all very scientifically done re depth and temperature etc - and waited the 60 to 70 days for hatching. I wish you cold see how those little turtles surfed out of the sandy nesting site and took off for the sea. Their oversized flippers rowed furiously as they tried to get to the sea. We had to set them down about 3 metres - 12 feet - from the water so that they could imprint on the beach for their return in 20 years time. Alas the beach may not be there in 20 years. Their determination was inspiring. I always remember them when I need an extra does of grit to 'get that book' finished!
