Music Monday 2018

There are so many ways to become involved with this year’s Music Monday celebrations, and we can’t wait to hear all about it! Register your school or community celebration at www.musicmonday.ca to tell us about how you're celebrating and to get your celebration on the Music Monday Map. Join to celebrate in person with us, and with the rest of the country on Monday, May 7!

This is a great opportunity for youth involvement. Here are some suggestions for how youth can become involved in this year’s Music Monday at your school or in your community:

• Engage older grades to mentor younger students when learning the Music Monday Anthem
• Start a youth-led planning committee for your school’s Music Monday celebration. Host regular meetings or have students create a written timeline and plan for the celebration on May 7th which could include the singing of the Anthem, sharing of music by all grade levels, or talking about the importance of music in your community.
• Involve students who are passionate about digital media to engage as a Youth Reporter, to share what’s happening in your local area
• Create a map of Canada identifying our cultural musical heritage from coast to coast to coast including different instruments, historical figures, and present musicians, connecting to this year’s diverse anthem, Sing It Together

Music Monday Funding for Schools

Thank you to all the teachers, volunteers, and event facilitators who registered your Music Monday celebration for this year’s funding opportunity. We look forward to hearing all about how your region is celebrating, and will be in touch with some exciting news soon for 300 schools supported with $250! 

Youth4Music National Virtual Summit

8 Cities - 6 Time Zones - 4 Hours - 1 Summit

Youth4Music is hosting a youth led national Virtual Summit on Saturday, April 14th beginning at 12:30pm EST. This Summit will engage youth from coast to coast to coast for the power and importance of music for youth in their schools and communities. A virtual platform will highlight the importance of youth involvement through music and how to make a difference through music. We will host an empowerment presentation, interview music champions, feature live music, and also include local viewing events with creative jam sessions! Hockey and Music

There is still time for your hockey team to get in the running for some amazing prizes! Enter your team to win up to $2,000 to go toward hockey gear by sending us a video of your team on ice, in uniform, singing your team’s favorite pump up jam! CME Board of Directors: Call For Nominations

The Nominations Committee of the Coalition for Music Education in Canada calls for nominations for four Directors for a three-year term commencing after the 2018 Annual General Meeting on April 28, 2018.  

The Board of Directors consists of ten Directors, including four Executive positions.  The Committee is seeking qualified candidates to play a role in the stewardship of an organization that reflects values such as engagement, transparency, accountability, and other attributes representing leading-edge governance.   Qualified candidates will have the skill-sets, expertise and experience necessary to further the vision and priorities of the Coalition’s strategic plan, Vision 25:  Finding our Collective Voice.

Whenever possible, the Board of Directors reflects diversity and is representative of all regions of Canada:  Western, Eastern, Northern and Central, as well as Francophone Canada.   The four positions that will be filled at this year’s AGM should ideally represent each of these regions.  Some areas of expertise that the Nominations Committee is looking for include finance, law, governance, strategic planning, risk assessment, fundraising and government relations.  However, we also encourage people with other competencies, including an interest in music education, to seek nomination.  

THE NOMINATION PROCESS

1. Nomination Forms are available at www.musicmakesus.ca
2. Nominations may be submitted by any organization or individual, and they must be seconded.
3. Nomination documents submitted by candidates for a position as Director will be presented to the membership during the AGM on April 28 at 9:00 am to be held at the Yamaha Canada Building, 135 Milner Ave., Scarborough, Ontario.
4. The deadline for the receipt of nominations is 6:00 pm ET on Friday, March 23, 2018.

Each Nomination must include the following:

• completed nomination form
• copy of the nominee’s resumé
• nominee’s personal statement
• 3 letters of support
• photo (head shot)
• brief bio for publication

Coalition AGM

The 2018  Annual General Meeting of the Coalition for Music Education in Canada will take place on Saturday, April 28, 3:00 pm ET at the Yamaha Canada building, 135 Milner Ave., Scarborough, Ontario.  All members of the association in good standing are invited to attend.  Anyone requiring additional information in advance of the meeting should contact Dr. Eric Favaro, Chair at eric@musicmakesus.ca

Ngamwag Shkinweg (The Youth Are Singing)

Youth4Music’s Indigenous Initiative Ngamwag Shkinweg is an initiative focused on inspiring Indigenous youth, elevating youth leadership, and connecting Indigenous youth from communities of all kinds, on reserve, and off reserve, through the power of music. Music in Indigenous culture is more than an art. It is a part of our way of life. Music is a part of our celebrations, our grieving, our teachings, and our communication. It is a medicine. Music is a part of our ceremony, and our healing. Through music, we connect. All drums, beating together, and all voices, signing as one. In music, we unite. In music, we reclaim. We ask Indigenous youth, “what does music mean to you?” “What music would you like to create in your community?” “What kind of music classes or workshops would you like to see offered in your community?”. We connect Indigenous youth to support each other, support positive change on their reserves and off-reserve, and support the music education Indigenous youth deserve.
