The easiest way to reframe anything is to change the event’s purpose. For example, when you move from the attitude of an earner to a learner, a shift of focus automatically occurs. Rather than focus just on the results to determine success or failure, the entire process is reviewed for feedback and potential lessons learned. Underlying beliefs and problems are uncovered, explored and promising solutions often revealed. Mid-course corrections and plan modifications can now take place.
Some other examples of paradigm shifts caused by changing your purpose would be:
Your primary duty is to the world, family, or friends versus to yourself.
Society determines your identity versus self-determined identity.
Fixing the world or others versus fixing yourself.
Arguing for your rightness versus your happiness.
Being reactive versus proactive or causative.
This ability to reinterpret past and current events will vastly improve the quality of your life. By changing the purpose that a past experience was designed to teach, you can reframe or reinterpret your story of the event so that it becomes a valuable learning lesson that supports growth and change in your life. Now your past is magically transformed into a process for growth rather than a source for blame, shame and guilt. Like Edison, the event becomes a successful learning lesson that provides the necessary feedback that moves you one step closer to the way that will work. Your past becomes the stepping stones needing to arrive at your consciously chosen future.
This ability to reframe your past will improve how you relate to the other participants and egos your mind has created to populate your world. It will allow you to entertain new possible ways for handling any given situation. It gives you an opportunity to reframe the event into a new interpretation that empowers and supports new beliefs and actions.
You always have the freedom to choose your own interpretation. The choice is yours. In order to interpret familiar situations differently as the observer, ask yourself this question. “What are the actual facts about this event?” Then ask, “What interpretation can I deliberately choose about these facts that would empower and support my learning?”
When you have reframed the situation properly, you will find that your old familiar moods of fear, anger and sadness will dissipate. If you still find yourself in the old chronic state of fear, anger or sadness, you have failed to separate the facts from your old convenient but disempowering interpretations. You need to examine your limiting beliefs. You are still arguing for your rightness and refusing to move into responsibility consciousness. You prefer to be a victim instead of the creator of your world.
When you move into responsibility consciousness, you possess the power to transform who you were in the past into what you are choosing to become in the future.
