Hello My Lovelies,

I hope you all had a joy filled Christmas and fabulous New Year celebrations. Did you make lots of lovely Christmas cakes and bakes? I was very slack in that department but I had a pretty good excuse…on very short notice, I flew to New Zealand with a 3 tier 50th Wedding Anniversary/Vow Renewal cake for my wonderful Aunty and Uncle in New Zealand! And yes…I did say 3 tier ;)

I was very honoured to be asked to be a part of their vow renewal ceremony, so decided to surprise them with a cake. I was dreading the cake being damaged or worse confiscated but my fears were unfounded. Every person and member of staff I dealt with was incredible! The Virgin Australia cabin crew were beyond fantastic!!

My Aunty and Uncle were thrilled with the cake and even though I had assembled it in a hotel room at 3am in the morning it didn’t turn out too badly. So a bit of a tip…if you’re traveling with cakes…I can’t recommend stencilling highly enough. It may not be a highly advanced technique, but if you have any mishaps (one tier slid across into the side of its box) it is less likely to show any damage.

Seeing them cut the cake was really the highlight of my caking year. They are incredibly special people and have been a huge and treasured part of my life. I don’t think there has been a moment before  in my cake career that has shown me more strongly, just how amazing and magical it feels to be able to create something with love to show someone how much they really mean to you.

Starry Night Bakers win Best Collaboration

I was so excited to see The Starry Night Collaboration had been voted as the Best Collaboration of 2013 by Cake Masters Magazine readers.

I was a little torn as I had been very lucky to be part of 3 collaborations during the year including the Tim Burton Cakenweenie Collaboration that was a finalist.

The Starry Night Collaboration will always hold a special place in my heart as it was the first and we just gathered as friends and passionate sugar artists…not knowing that we were leading the way for a whole host of fabulous and talented decorators to share their love of sugar artistry with each other and the world.

Thanks so much Rosie, all the team at Cake Masters and everyone who voted for us!

And a massive shout out to my fellow 49 collaborators. You were the very first and came together from all parts of the world in friendship and a shared love of sugar artistry.

And finally, a big, huge thanks to gorgeous Alyssa of Cuteology Cakes for being our fearless leader and brainchild. Congratulations Alyssa! xxxx

Sweets by Donna

What a fabulous idea from Donna! I can see that I will be scouring the shops to find these.

I think I might also leave one just for water...much easier than a brush for wetting fondant pieces to stick together I think!

Thanks for sharing with us Donna :) x

Tips for Taking Great Cake Photos Please by Mardie Makes Cakes

How many times have you spent hours making a beautiful cake, cookies etc only to have your photos let you down? I'm SO guilty of this...my pics are a disgrace! Here is Mardie asking for some advice :)

Hi everyone,

I have finally got a quite decent digital SLR (Christmas present!) and now wondering what other tools I need for taking really great cake pics.
I’ve been looking at photo/lighting booths, do u think these are the way to go or do u prefer natural lighting? I reckon I’d need quite a large booth, if anyone has one, can u please recommend a good size?
