Governor Cuomo announces proposal of First-In-The-Nation cybersecurity regulation to protect Consumers and Financial Institutions

On September 12, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo broke new ground in proposing a state-level regulation that would require banks, insurance companies, and other financial services entities regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services (“NYDFS”) to establish formal cybersecurity programs. The biggest impact of the new regulations is likely to be on small banks and insurers, which may now need to bring their cyber programs up to at least a minimum standard. The two requirements imposed by the proposed regulation are – having a written cybersecurity policy and a designated CISO for overseeing company’s cybersecurity program.

Education Sector Now Most Targeted with Ransomware

Ransomware attacks are on the rise, and now they are hitting school district technology systems even more than healthcare and the government. While findings show rates of ransomware attacks have increased for every industry over the past 12 months, research shows just how prevalent attacks on education have become. Education is seeing more than 2x the amount of ransomware attacks as Government (the 2nd most targeted sector), and nearly 4x the amount of attacks as Healthcare.

Majority of enterprises admit they are vulnerable to insider threats
