New President Elect

AAMT's new President Elect is Allason McNamara from Victoria, who was the only nomination. Allason is the Head of Mathematics at Mount Scopus Memorial College. She has a Masters in Mathematical Modelling and Data Analysis and has been a co-author of several mathematics texts. Allason is a former President of the Mathematical Association of Victoria and the current AAMT Treasurer.

Allason will take up her new role after the AAMT Annual General Meeting on 23 May.

Call for APMC editor(s)

Expressions of interest are sought for the voluntary position of editor(s) of Australian Primary Mathematics Classroom (APMC) to work in conjunction with AAMT staff to produce four issues of this journal at regular intervals each year.

Appointments will be for 2016–17 with a hand-over period in 2015.

Expressions of interest should be submitted to the AAMT office (office@aamt.edu.au) together with a brief CV. For more information, please contact CEO Will Morony (wmorony@aamt.edu.au; phone 08 8363 0288). 

Deadline for submissions is 8 May 2015.

Become a Mathematics Meta-Mentor

AAMT has partnered with the University of Canberra to undertake a project to support science teachers to appreciate the mathematical demands of their subject, and to provide strategies to support students better meet the demands that science makes on their ability to use their mathematics.

The project is entitled Unpacking the maths in science. AAMT members are invited to submit an expression of interest to become one of five Mathematics Meta-Mentors (3Ms) who will be the core workers on the project.

​Teachers Mutual Bank Indigenous Educator Grant

Indigenous people in education are invited to apply for the Teachers Mutual Bank Indigenous Educator Grant to attend the Excellence in Professional Practice Conference 21–23 May in Sydney. Valued at $1000, the grant is designed to facilitate attendance at EPPC by covering travel, accommodation and conference costs for the successful applicant.

Applicants are asked to provide (max. 250 words):

  • full name
  • mobile/daytime phone number
  • description of your role in education and/or where you work
  • how attending EPPC would benefit you and your work

before midnight AEST, Monday 20 April 2015. The grant recipient will be contacted by Friday 24 April.

HPM newsletter

HPM is the International Study Group on the Relations between History and Pedagogy of Mathematics affiliated to the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI).

The group aims at "stressing the conception of mathematics as a living science, a science with a long history, a vivid present and an as yet unforeseen future".
