Are you the ruler of your own destiny?

This is an important question that people often contemplate. When I asked this question in front of a large audience, the answer is usually split. About 1/3 say yes. They definitely claim to have free will. They proclaim their life experiences are proof that their own decisions are the controlling factor in their lives.

Another 1/3 respond that their fate or destiny is fixed or predestined. They site unusual circumstances or serendipitous events that indicate some higher power or fate was pulling the strings. They claim they had no choice in the matter. They also claim their personal experiences prove fate was in control..

The remaining 1/3 are undecided. They are unsure. They do not want to believe they are powerless but they also do not wish to assume 100% responsibility for their experiences either.

So, how would you answer that question? What evidence would you have to support your conclusion?
