Dear Investors,

We are living in times of change - climate, pandemic, climate, war in Europe, climate, climate and climate...

We need to work together and start to see our problems in a holistic perspective, where we are no better than the worst and always consider the long-term consequences of our actions (or lack of actions).

This goes for the current war in Europe - where Europe and the western countries finally got together (the pandemic couldn't even get us to stand together). The people of Ukraine can - who show so much courage these days, nobody wants to let them down.

IPCC bringing us old news

Just read the latest IPCC report. Really there is nothing new, we all know everything we need to know and what to do - but still we don't do the right thing. What does war mean for us sustainable investors?

Well, if you care about what you make a profit on in the stock market you need to check your current investments for Russian stocks – especially if you have ETFs.

If in doubt – you might just want to sell it, imagine if you found out you made a profit from companies that support Putin’s war in Ukraine.

Change is also happening in individual perceptions

Where gender and identity are changing, challenging status que and helping some to find peace, while provoking others.

To me the fluid gender perception is the best weapon against patriarchy. A system we all contribute to whenever we accept it, live it, and don't question it.

But if you don't identify as man or woman - or change between the two - you're breaking down the foundation patriarchy is built on. Personally, I love that, some of us are running from one box to another trying to fit - while knowing very well we won't fit at all, because we will never be that (white) man, it is built for. Being second best all the time can be tiresome and exhausting - why many women find other things to do.

But change is here - I can feel it! It's where business as usual is no longer cutting it for investors, workers, or the planet. Where things are changing on so many levels and actions count more than ever.

Investing with a gender lens

At Sustainify we have tracked the gender balance in the largest and most traded companies in the Nordics and let’s put things straight – it’s not balanced (Norway are of course doing it best, they have quotas). But a pledge or policy for a company on gender balance doesn’t mean they will execute on it if there are no requirements, sanctions, or strategic focus from management. If we look at start-ups we see that when female founders are given the right opportunities, they quickly turn the business into a worthwhile investment for their investors. While female founders remain the minority in the world of start-ups, the numbers show that more and more investors are paying attention. Data from 2020 and 2021 reveals that start-ups with female founders are exiting one year faster than the market average, while seeing the value of these exits skyrocket 144 percent - that is over 40 percentage points higher than the rest of the market. There is no denying the obvious for investors: this is the best time to empower, encourage and invest in female founders.
