THE DOON PROMISE

AUGUST 2017

There is no Unreachable or Unteachable Child!

The Yellow Magic Buses!

Aasraa’s fourth Mobile Learning Centre (MLC) was donated by The Rotary Foundation in July 2017. Equipped with the e-learning audio and visual tools, this classroom on wheels presently caters to 80 street children and pavement dwellers at Rispana area in Dehradun. This is a significant step as we make progress in reaching out to the out-of-school children and providing them with literacy tools that are not only high tech but raise their interest and awareness levels for better education.

The Voice of Inspiration

Mrs Jyotsna Brar, the former principal of Welham Girls’ School in Dehradun and an empathetic teacher graciously conducted a training workshop for Aasraa teachers in May 2017. With special emphasis on English and Hindi languages, she addressed the teachers on diverse subjects like team spirit, professionalism, use of head and heart for effective teaching, striving for excellence, earning and not demanding respect of children and most importantly, taking pride in the job.

Remedial Classes

Remedial teaching, based on students’ abilities and needs, provides learning support to students who lag behind their counterparts in school. In the summer break, remedial classes were organized for all children who have been mainstreamed into SGRR public school with special focus on English language.

Workshops

Three children from our shelter homes - Shivani, Minu and Gautam participated in a workshop organised by Shri Bhuvneshwari Mahila Ashram/Plan India on Child Rights & Child Protection. In addition, Uttarakhand Bal Vidhan Sabha was set up where a Speaker, Chief Minister, ministers and MLAs were elected. All members discussed and documented the child related issues in the state and their solutions in a comprehensive report that was presented to the Govt. of Uttarakhand.

Creating Sports Champions!

The Doon School, Dehradun’s premier residential institute, welcomed our children in June 2017 on their sports field to play basketball and cricket. Special coaching in basketball was arranged throughout the summer break for children from our shelter homes.

Immunization for Health

Healthcare accompanied by immunization is an integral part of our work. Max India Foundation conducted their 5th round of immunization with a new set of 123 children from Dholak Basti, Kabadi Bazaar and Azaad Colony, near ISBT. The children who have probably never been immunized since birth were inoculated against Hepatitis-B.

The Fun Way !

Aasraa constantly seeks to explore opportunities and activities that enable the children to have a holistic learning. In April 2017, 80 children were taken for a 5-day trekking trip to Tehri District, Garhwal Hills. This trip was organized to inculcate a habit of a fitter life. The trip included games, water sport activities, rappelling and visits to places like Chandrabadani Devi temple. In an attempt to raise awareness on cleanliness, our children also cleaned the surrounding areas of the temple.

Adult Literacy

With 300 million illiterate adults, India is the most illiterate nation on earth. In May 2017, Aasraa has taken a small step towards adult literacy by reaching out to adults in the Bindal Slum & Kumarhatti. One of the Mobile Learning Centres is parked by 5pm every evening at Bindal with 2 staff members who help the adults learn. Currently 14 ladies are regular; the numbers will go up gradually. With this initiative, Aasraa aims to make parents on par with their school going children, improve their quality of life, and increase employment opportunities for them.

Our Deepest Condolences

Mrs Shanti Varma, the former principal of Welham Girls’ School, passed away on 4th August 2017 after valiantly battling cancer. She was a lady of great courage, indomitable strength and the courage of her convictions inspired generations of Welhamites to choose the “harder right over the easier wrong, to side with the truth no matter what". Mrs Varma's loss is incalculable to us at Aasraa and to the larger family of Welham Girls’ School.
