So there was Nehemiah…

  • Doing a good thing. A thing God called him to do: Rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem.
  • Doing it for the right reasons. Because he was stirred by God to do it.
  • And doing it with model integrity. God’s way.

Nehemiah was in the center of God’s will and in the midst of God’s work, when—BAM! Satan showed up to try to take Nehemiah down and put a stop to the work.

And not just once, but over and over. First this way and then that way. (Here’s the full story.)

Why? Because spiritual opposition to God’s people and God’s work comes (1 Corinthians 15:23-28).

For Nehemiah, things got so bad that to finish the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem, his volunteer building crew literally had to work on the wall with one hand—while holding a weapon in the other

Maybe you can relate. Because every Christ follower alive has some kind of work to do in God’s kingdom (Ephesians 2:10). And when you’re doing it, spiritual opposition comes.

The Bible says the enemy comes to kill, steal, and destroy (John 10:10), and sometimes that means he comes for us. Sometimes we or our loved ones are in battles for our lives. But God has provided us the tools we need to fight spiritual battles and win (Ephesians 6:11-18).

Fighting for Your Life: Chrystal Evans Hurst’s Podcast Episode 235 featuring Susie Larson – In this episode, Susie shares about a physical battle for her life that had spiritual roots. Although I’ve heard her recount this story before (and she writes about it in her excellent book Fully Alive) it still made me cry to hear again how much God cared about setting her up for the victory she won through the fight, because I’ve been there, too. Don’t miss this.

Parting Words & Win My New Book!

The Bible really calls it like it is, both in the inevitably of the fight, and in the ability of the Christian to win:

Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.

– Ephesians 6:13 (NLT)
