Hey ,

yesterday I discovered this quote by Somerset Maugham:

'I write only when inspiration strikes. Fortunately it strikes every morning at nine o'clock sharp.'

At first, I thought it was brilliant. But then, I realised that if I had read it during my creative burnout, it would not have inspired me at all, it would have made me feel very very bad.

I do think you need continuous work to develop any skills, creative or not, but we're also humans filled with emotions, ups and downs, and things often always go as planned.

So what to do not to feel overwhelmed and yet, keep on using your creative muscle ?

Well, set a small Creative Challenge of course!

Everybody can participate

This is very important: you don't have to consider yourself an artist to be creative. We all are creative, we just need to use the muscle.

The Creative Challenge #1

  1. Pick a number between 7 and 15. Just decide, now. Pick a number, say it aloud if needed, and stick to it.
  2. Pick a field you would like to spend more time on, but never do, because life. It can be painting, music, writing, dancing, sculpting, drawing, yoga, filmmaking etc.
  3. For the next seven days, starting tomorrow (aka Saturday 13), you will spent the amount of minutes equivalent to the number you picked on it.
  4. So if you chose 9 and drawing, for the next seven days, your creative challenge is to draw something for 9 minutes every day until Saturday 20th.

You can work 7 times on the same movement, make 7 drawings, compose 7 songs, make a 7 part-film or write a giant poem, you decide!

The purpose? To make something you want to, but probably never take time to.

What can be accomplished in 7 minutes for 7 days? A lot more you can imagine! Creativity is a muscle. I will die saying that. We always try to go big, but what about starting small and growing from there? That's my offer to you today.

Want to play this week?

Pick a number, pick a field, and roll with it for the next seven days!

Instagram your progress and use the hashtag #thecreativebreak to make it a collective experience (you can find me at @mentorless), or keep it to yourself where it feels safe, but consider saying yes to it!

Happy Creative Challenge, !

'Til soon,

Nathalie
