Book Jewels: Fastening and Furnishings for Bookbinders

I have 2 seats left in my April, 2017 Book Jewels class. This class has taken on a life of its own and could be described as "making jewelry quality, hand fabricated metal objects to be later attached to books." What started out as a class on making simple, medieval book closures and decorations has bloomed into an experimental playground with some students returning year after year to learn ever more advanced skills. Whether you want to dabble in metalsmithing and see what it's about, or you want to advance your soldering and fabricating skills, join us in beautiful Volcano, California in April to make it happen.

Learn about the history!

For the first several hours of class, students are treated to a popular discussion about the history of hardware on books. Myriad photographs and samples are presented and discussed in order to frame the class projects.

Each student works with me to design and storyboard a piece. You'll learn invaluable skills that will then be used in every metalsmithing project you design for the rest of your life.

Flight of Fancy!

Based on our design and your experience level, you'll make the book hardware you conceive. No ideas? Don't worry. I'll show you how to make some of my designs. These could be anything from simple pierced brass designs to a complicated contemporary piece with a soldered hinge. We'll plan it together and I'll show you the way.
