AAMT e-news

for the Australian mathematics education community

6 November 2015

Toby Spencer, usual editor of the AAMT e-news, is on his honeymoon. Congratulations and best wishes to him and Leandra. However, a consequence is that others in the office are producing and distributing the next couple of editions. Apologies in advance for any shortcomings.

Mathematics by Inquiry project

Mathematics by Inquiry is a bold new Australian government-funded program to promote new approaches to mathematics teaching in Australian schools. AAMT and the Australian Academy of Science (AAS) are partners in the project.

Quite a bit has happened since the project was announced in the last edition:

  • Congratulations to Dr Steve Thornton who has been appointed by AAS as the project's Executive Director. As a Life Member and former President of AAMT Steve will bring to the role an excellent understanding of teachers' needs and aspirations.
  • The project has produced a Fact Sheet with some initial information. It is available here.
  • AAMT is advertising the position of Manager: Mathematics by Inquiry Engagement. This is a senior appointment that is crucial to AAMT facilitating extensive and deep engagement of the profession in the work of the project, both in the development phase and in setting up for dissemination and sustained use of the materials in schools. Details are available through the AAMT website. The position will be based in the Adelaide office.
  • The Academy has also advertised positions for three Resource writers. Click here for details of those positions.

TEMPEST Project – job opportunity

On behalf of the University of Tasmania (leader of the TEMPEST project), AAMT, in partnership with MASA and MTANT, has advertised the position of Implementation Officer for SA and NT. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the quality and extent of professional learning available to teachers of mathematics in primary and secondary schools.

Planning is underway for a further three similar positions in other places. Stay tuned for details.

We need your help...you'll benefit too

Reframing Mathematical Furures is another of AAMT’s AMSPP projects. The aim is to build a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for identifying and responding to student learning needs in relation to algebraic, spatial, and statistical reasoning in the junior secondary years.

Drafts of the assessment tools and targeted teaching advice that form the basis of the framework will be available for trialling in Term 1 2016. You and your school can contribute to the further development of the framework by undertaking to trial these materials and by providing advice to the project team. This will be a valuable contribution to the work of the project, but there will also be a big benefit for you and your students as the project team will do the marking. You will get some really useful insights into your students’ learning in these critical domains of mathematics.
