Queen's Birthday honours

Two significant contributors to mathematics education and the teaching and learning of mathematics in our schools were recognised in the recent Queen's Birthday Honours.

  • Emeritus Professor Peter Taylor (ACT) received an AO for distinguished service to education, and to youth, particularly through the development of mathematical competitions and challenges for students, as an academic, and to professional learning associations.
  • Dr Peter Gould (NSW) received a Public Service Medal (PSM) for his contributions to mathematics education in NSW over many years.

The Council and members of AAMT congratulate both Peters on this well-deserved recognition.

    Exemplary ICT survey

Secondary teachers of Science, Technology and Mathematics are invited to participate in a survey intended to gather information about their personal and professional use of computer technology and the factors that may be associated with exemplary practice.

This survey is a component of a PhD study through Curtin University which aims to find out whether there is a set of common qualities, characteristics and practices of exemplary, technology-integrating, teachers.

The survey will take around 20 minutes: www.surveymonkey.com/r/Exemplary_ICT_2015

    Teacher mindfullness survey

All teachers are invited to take part part in a short 5-minute survey being conducted as part of research by the The Science of Learning Research Centre into teacher mindfulness and wellbeing. The survey asks for as many different words as possible that have positive, neutral or negative meaning to you as a teacher, and that are related to your teaching and work. [featured resource] Teaching with Rich Learning Tasks: A Handbook

This excellent book goes beyond the rhetoric to look in detail at rich learning tasks: what makes them 'rich', what makes them important, and what learning, teaching and assessment look like when both students and teachers are engaged in them. It contains a wealth of information and practical advice, along with plenty of examples of tasks and suggestions for how to use and explore the ideas in your own practice.
