STEM Connections

ACARA's STEM Connections project was conducted in collaboration with AAMT where13 schools around the country were supported to develop an integrated STEM project that had its basis in the real world and incorporated the Australian Curriculum learning areas of Mathematics, Science and Technologies.

The STEM Connections report, illustrations of practice and work samples are now available. Go to http://resources.australiancurriculum.edu.au/stem.

Did you catch an idea?

Adam Spencer, Numeracy Ambassador for National Literacy and Numeracy Week, posted:

Taking 4 kids to the movies this Saturday. Need to coordinate two separate movies at two different times but have to leave enough time in the middle to get the grocery shopping done for the week and still get back to the cinemas before anyone gets out. Maths and movies — I love it!

AAMT would love to highlight your 'Catch-an-Idea' on the AAMT website. Send a link, graphic, text or video to nlnw@aamt.edu.au.

[webinar] Building culture and capacity to enact the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics

Wednesday 14 September 2016, 4.30 pm EST

Presenter: Rob Proffitt-White

The right knowledge – A clear valuing and understanding of mathematical content, the connections and a working knowledge of the proficiency strands underpins successful teaching

This workshop targets teachers and school leaders and aims to upskill their assessment literacy by:

  • creating cognitive activation tasks that promote critical thinking in all students
  • ensuring a consistent and shared responsibility for numeracy transfer
  • differentiating tasks through a focus on the proficiency strands
  • classifying the different problem solving types.

[featured resource] Concept-Rich Mathematics Instruction

Meir Ben-Hur

Have your students actually learned mathematical concepts, or have they merely memorised facts and formulae? This book identifies common student misconceptions and discusses the critical role that teachers play in prompting their correction. Using familiar classroom anecdotes and sample problems, the author navigates the reader through teaching practices, instruction ideas and assessment types. Suggestions are given on incorporating thought-provoking activities into lessons, assessment and conducting individual and class discussions.
