Guy Fawkes Night 2016 at RISEBA University

Last Friday on 4 November (yes, the day when the snow fell and traffic was hell in Riga :) ) RISEBA University in collaboration with BritCham held the Guy Fawkes Night 2016

RISEBA University had done a great job and prepared a very charming evening for all. Both the younger attendees and the adults had plenty of things to keep them entertained. As last year the culmination was a riveting play intertwining the past and the present - the Gunpowder Plot and Brexit - followed by the fireworks and the big bonfire - we burned the Guy Fawkes along with all his top hat of snow.

Fingers crossed that next year we will have the opportunity to meet again to celebrate this fun British tradition though hopefully without the nature forces giving us (by now traditional) trouble.

We would like to say big thank you to all the supporters: Albert Hotel, CBRE, Fantasy Park, Indian Raja, Jaguar, Putnu dārzs, RISEBA Alumni Club, SemaraH Hotels, Singh’s and Spot Cafe!

BritCham Academy: How To Write E-mails Right?

The second BritCham Academy session: How To Write E-mails Right? that took place on 9 November was on a very practical topic that we deal with in our everyday lives.

Our guest speaker Aiga Veckalne gave a great presentation on e-mail etiquette and gave us tips to make sure that we control e-mails and not the other way around. She used a brilliant example on how because of this communication tool's perceived informality, simplicity and fast way of communication some ways we ordinarily use it is actually so very obviously unacceptable when adapted to real life. Aiga also introduced the attendees with the 18 e-mail tactics that help you write better e-mails and improve communication with your team by Hassan Osman.

As we stated above e-mails (and the doubt and dilemmas connected with writing them) are something we deal with every day, however, now we feel a bit better equipped to handle it all correctly and for that we would like to say many thanks to Aiga! And we would also like to send a big thank you to our host Radisson Ble Elizabete Hotel!

The next BritCham Academy seminar is planned on 14 December at 9:30, the guest speaker will be Karlīna Anna Rozenfelde who will address the topic - Work Smart Not Hard. We will send out more information soon, however the sign-up is already open on BritCham's website.

FICIL News

Remembrance Sunday on 13 November 2016

As in previous years, the British Embassy in Riga, will hold its annual Commonwealth Service of Remembrance at the site of the Commonwealth war graves in the Jelgava Military Cemetery.  This year the commemoration will fall on Sunday the 13th of November 2016 and the Service will begin at 10:40 and last approximately 30 minutes.  Head of Mission Mr Tim Colley and Defence Attaché Commander Gary Brooks  will lay a wreath on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen.  They will be followed by other Commonwealth Ambassadors and representatives of the Latvian government, military and Jelgava Municipality.  Other diplomatic representatives may lay wreaths immediately thereafter if they choose to do so.  A two-minute silence will be observed with a bugler from the Latvian National Defence Forces orchestra playing “the Last Post” and “Reveille”.  Head of Mission will also lay a wreath on the Latvian war memorial after the Commonwealth commemoration.  Some warm soup will be served immediately after the service.

Please get in touch if you have any questions and let us know whether you wish to attend by e-mail: RSVP.Riga@fco.gov.uk or by phone: 67774702
