Postcard Paintings

William Wegman's Gorgeous Paintings

One of my favorite parts of summer is catching up on books and things that I have put off doing all school year. I've been working on writing up some articles about lessons I've taught when I came across this book of postcard paintings called William Wegman: Paintings. Many of you, I'm sure, are familiar with his photographs of Weimaraner dogs. Did you also know that he is an accomplished painter and his background is in painting?

These paintings start with the selection of a postcard or a number of postcards which are attached to a canvas. Then, William paints around the postcards and extends the image to create a new larger picture. I thought this would be a really fun art project for older kids. This also reminds me of the art assignment where you cut out a portion of a magazine picture and then extend the image with paint to create a new composition.

"The important thing is the transformation.  The cards get lost.  One thing leads to another and a new order emerges."

You can see more of William Wegman's postcard paintings on his blog or his website or his new book William Wegman: Paintings.

Disclosure:  I was not paid to share about this book or given any free products.  I thought this would be a really fun idea for kids to try.  Amazon Affiliate links are used but I only share books and products I use and love.
