Diversity And The Media: Where Is The 'Black' in British Music? Tuesday May 26, 6-8.30pm Free @ LCC

May 20 2015

Greetings

Ahead of British Black Music Month (BBMM2015) and the June 4 formal launch of RE:IMI (Race Equality: In Music Industry), join moi wearing my BBM/BMC & RE:IMI hats (yes, I know I tell my music industry course students one can only wear one hat at a time :-0), for what should be a timely debate* on 'race' equality and diversity within the music industry.

Those on the 'Diversity and the Media: Where is the 'black' in British Music?' panel include Ruby Mulraine, a former BBC executive producer and founder of the Black Music Canteen; Remel London, a young TV and radio presenter, and BBC 1xtra DJ Ace. It's a free event organised by Kaimo and the University of the Arts London African Caribbean Society at London College Of Communication (LCC), Podium Theatre, London SE1 6SB (Elephant & Castle). Despite the UK being a melting-pot of cultures, African and ethnic minorities are too often under-represented in various categories of the media - including the British music industry.

In our final series of "Diversity and the Media" we'll be questioning, "where is the 'black' in British music?" To help us answer, there will be a panel of music industry professionals and musicians.

This event will highlight various black musical influences i.e. Reggae, Garage, Afrobeats etc, that have contributed towards the making of what British music is today. How is British Black music represented, and who represents it?...

Kind regards,
