Hi Lovelies,

This month has been very busy and I know like me, you’re probably wondering where the year has gone. One of the highlights of my month…well really my year was finally meeting one of my fabulous cake friends, Jacinta Perkins of Kidacity!

I’m not sure if you have managed to meet any of the people you interact with in the cake world but I highly recommend it. I have made some incredible friends and each one that I have met up with have been a delight. I spent the day with gorgeous Jacinta, laughing and talking till our faces ached! When we said goodbye I couldn’t resist an extra hug and knew I would be missing her before I made it to the carpark!

I can’t wait for our next get together in Sydney where we plan on foisting ourselves on gorgeous Kate from The Greedy Baker!

Have you met some wonderful cake friends on your travels? You can share your stories and photos here.

This Months Interview
Debbie Brown

Lea Webster, owner of One Stop Cake Decorations, fell in love with Debbie’s work early in her decorating career. After Lea attended one of Debbie’s classes at a conference in 2011, she decided to do everything she could to bring Debbie to Penrith and share her incredible talent and attention to detail with local cake decorators. The class was a huge success and we have been fortunate enough to have Debbie visit us again this year. Lea invited me along to have a chat with her.

Most Popular Cake for October

Horse Inspired Cake

Ciccio Cake

Jo is always coming up with brilliant and original designs and techniques. And you don't have to be a horse lover to appreciate the excellent details and clever features shown on this cake. From the 'hand-tooled' leather look base tier, to the fence post top tier, it screams originality and design perfection. The 'denim' cake board and the edible bit just tip me over the edge into total Cake Envy!!!

Congratulations Ciccio Cakes!

Dressed up Fondant Babies & Tutorial

Shawna of McGreevy's Cakes

Oh wow!! I have always wanted to make some little dressed up babies and what an inspiration these little cuties are!! Fabulous Shawna takes the cuteness factor off the charts with these adorable little guys....how could you choose a favourite? Well...I've ALWAYS loved Cookie Monster and Jasmine would send me to my room if I didn't pick Elmo.....either way, I couldn't possibly eat that much 'awwwww' in one bite ;)

The Rescuers Cake

Little Cherry Cake Company

I've never seen The Rescuers movie, but as soon as I laid eyes on this brilliant creation, I wanted to rush out and hire it. Tracey always shows us what an incredible eye for detail she has and this cake is no exception. Perfect modeling combined with a clever design give us an action packed glimpse at the adventure. Perfection!

Superheros with Edible Masks

Ciccio Cakes

Kapow!!! What a fantastic way to make anyone someone special in your life feel like a Superhero! Jo's work just keeps going from strength to strength. I find myself eagerly awaiting her next creation. Not only has she shared this brilliant piece with us, she has made a tutorial for the masks as well! You can find it here

Chanel Hand Bag

Unusual Cakes for You

This has to be my favourite bag cake to date! When I first saw it, I did a double take...was this the bag Robin had to recreate? No..THIS was the cake!! What a superb finish, and Robin said it was a last minute order! I think any guest at that party could be forgiven for picking this little beauty up! I know I want to...SO much! Totally fabulous! :)

Kitchen Talk

Unresponsive Client by JessiCakesTexas

Hello everyone!

I recently received an order for a cake that was for a woman’s two sons birthdays. She is the sister of a girl I use to work with so I gave her a deal and quoted her 85 for a three tier detailed Ninja Turtle cake with fondant. I also gave her a two tier option for 65. She never responded and the date for the cake is the 28th. She hasn’t returned any of my messages and if I don’t get started on some of the detail work by tomorrow there is no way I can finish the cake without pulling a few all nighters (since I’m a stay at home mom with a 10mo old this would be extremely stressful!) I feel almost like she thought I was charging too much and was out of her price range but she hasn’t said anything to me about it. What should I do? Message her and tell her I need to know by tonight? Or just leave it alone and if she messages me tomorrow or early next week just tell her I don’t have time to do the cake?

this is the first time this has happened so I don’t know what I should do!

Question - Just how much time do you think should be spent trying to 'chase up' a client who has placed an order with you? Are you a decorator that expects the client to reply the first time and leave it at that or are you more like Jessica and end up being given the run around? Does anyone have any hard and fast rules the stick to and can share? What do you do in your business to ensure your clients take your time seriously?

You can let us know what you think here
