Editorial

Hello my Lovelies,

I hope you’ve had a wonderful month and are busily getting prepared for the Jolly man in the red suits visit….or like me you’re finding yourself putting your hands over your ears and humming loudly like a 3 year old when anyone mentions the dreaded ‘C’ word….but Christmas is NEXT issue….yes…it’s THAT close!

This month I had the delight of making an owl cake for a gorgeous young friend of ours who was turning 18. She is in love with all things Harry Potter and since I was given free reign I decided against the usual HP cakes.
I decided to make Hedwig the Owl in a cage. It was a small party so I didn’t need acres of cake. I loved making it!! I can sit and tune out for hours making feathers and the kids pretty much left me in my zone.

When her Grandad came to pick the cake up for the 3 hour trip through the bushfires, he was very confused. He looked between me and the cake about 6 times as if to say ‘well where is it?’ ….and possibly ‘why do you have an owl in that birdcage in your hallway? I laughed and explained that was the cake….he literally scratched his head and said ‘I was expecting (and made a traditional cake shape gesture in the air) a CAKE’

The poor thing…he wasn’t at all convinced I wasn’t pulling his leg. I carried Hedwig out to the car thinking how funny that was and wondering if anyone else had come across this when I looked at the vehicle he had driven….a little Mazda….I had warned that it would stand about 2 feet tall haha! You should have seen us….poor Grandad still wondering why on earth he was picking up an owl when he had been sent for a cake and me frantically trying to fit 3 into 1.

The end result after much hilarity was the cake and its drivers got there safely even though they were diverted by the bushfires and Maneesha LOVED her CAKE…..but didn’t want to cut it! But that’s ANOTHER story!

Cakes Decor Gazette Editors Choice
The Editors Choice for November is...

Fear

by

Silvia Pizzolato

As I was searching for this months Editors Choice, I was incredibly moved when I saw this awe-inspiring piece by Silvia. I kept looking, worrying that perhaps some would be offended by the nudity and some would just fail to see the point. But I kept coming back...drawn by those imploring, desperate eyes, as if she was pleading to not be left behind.

Whether or not this is your 'cup of tea' you can't deny the incredible skill and artistry it takes to move the viewer and inspire an emotional response. Many of us aspire to such a breathtaking feat...few of us ever achieve it.

Bravo Silvia and congratulations!

My Name is Jo Orr, and I live in Rotorua, New Zealand. I’m Married with a Stepdaughter Julz & 2 Border Collies Scottie & Teddy. I’m the Head Chef at Ciccio Italian Café but Cake Decorating is a real passion, I love being able to be creative, although I cannot draw to save myself…..yes not even a stick figure(I was told in school by my art teacher never to be an artist) I think my mind works in 3D, but only in the last couple of years have I started selling my cakes, although not a sweet tooth myself I love creating cakes that people cannot resist eating…I’ve been told on more than one occasion I’m a bad influence

Monthly Top 5

Most Popular Cake for November

A Blue Cake

Neli

This is one of those pieces that you look at and just know that the decorator truly LOVED the project they were working on.  And lo and behold...this was Neli's own birthday cake! There are so many things that could have gone wrong here...not many people can get this combionation of colours, techniques and textures right but Neli has made all the elements join together in perfect harmony!

Congratulations Neli and a very Happy belated Birthday! :) x

I had a dream

Ana Remigio

Ana based this stunning design on a Givenchy top she had seen. She says that she couldn't get them out of her head and even dreamed about them! I can see why. The end result is an incredibly original and eye catching design! Well done Ana :)

Black & White Beaded Cake

Happyhills Cakes

Wow!!! The first thing that strikes me about this design is how brilliantly original and unique it is...then I looked closer and realised that all that beautiful detail is done with edible beads!!!! Can you imagine the hours? But so very well worth the result...sublime!! :)

Great Gatsby Glamour

Coocakeachoo

I love every inch of this cake! It screams decadent 20's glamour and the trill of the Era! The movement of the feathered tier, the understated blingage of the two top tiers...all sheer perfection! Big love! :)

Barbie Doll Cake

William Tan

I love when a decorator takes a typical style and turns it on its head! What a breath of fresh air! William has made this Barbie new, fresh and vibrant! You can almost see her actually moving down the catwalk.
