Teacher professional learning surveys

The Towards Educating Mathematics Professionals Encompassing Science and Technology (TEMPEST) project, conducted in collaboration with AAMT, is focussed on evaluating and improving professional learning for teachers of mathematics. Mathematics teachers at all levels are invited to complete two surveys:

Your input (and that of colleagues) would be of great assistance to the development of what will become a highly useful tool for teachers!

International Mathematical Modelling Challenge

The IM2C is new to Australia for 2016. It provides an opportunity for senior students to work in teams on a challenging modelling problem over 5 days (17 March – 23 April). For more information, go to www.immchallenge.org or contact australia@immchallenge.org.

Connect with Maths Day 2016

Connect with Maths Day on Friday 18 March is a one-day professional learning event to celebrate and promote the importance and diversity of mathematics in society, themed by the five Connect with Maths communities. Attend in person or connect online!

[featured resource] Making number talks matter

Cathy Humphries, Ruth Parker

A number talk is a brief daily practice where students mentally solve computation problems and talk about their strategies. There are chapters on each of the four basic operations, plus one on fractions, decimals and percent. Each chapter has many carefully selected problems that straddle a wide range of year levels, numerous samples of student responses, and suggested prompting questions. There are multiple well-explained mathematical strategies, as well as teaching strategies and ideas for successful talks.

Get your students thinking and talking!
