National Literacy and Numeracy Week

It's National Literacy and Numeracy Week (31 August – 6 September)! Solve an everyday problem: sending and receiving messages that are randomly disrupted by noise and static. Or make a trihexaflexagon or tesselation.

You can find activities and problems for students at www.literacyandnumeracy.gov.au.

Teacher professional learning surveys

The Towards Educating Mathematics Professionals Encompassing Science and Technology (TEMPEST) project managed by the University of Tasmania aims to develop a quality assurance framework for professional learning.

Mathematics teachers at all levels are asked to complete two surveys:

Your input (and that of colleagues) would be of great assistance to the development of what will become a highly useful tool for teachers!

[webinar] Essential Mathematics through Mathematics Games

Presenter: Richard Korbosky
Thursday 3 September 2015, 4.30–5.30 pm EST

Essential Mathematics through Mathematics Games is Part 2 of the Maths and Game Learning series. Games should have a clear mathematics outcome and a focus on essential mathematics that clearly link back to the common Australian mathematics curriculum. What are pedagogical sound mathematics games which involve students in a range of situations including individual, pairs and small group learning environments?

Congratulations

The AAMT Council wishes to congratulate Professor Cheryl Praeger (University of Western Australia) for receiving Dr Mehdi Behzad’s Award of the Iranian Mathematical Society. Professor Praeger is the Chair the Australian Mathematics Olympiad Committee (AMOC) at the Australian Mathematics Trust, and is involved in many programs for students in WA, as well as being a regular speaker at teacher conferences. It is good to see Australian mathematicians honoured on the world stage, especially those who make important and sustained contributions to mathematics education.

Tinkerplots

Users of the dynamic data exploration software Tinkerplots will know that there have been changes to the distribution and licencing arrangements. The temporary free licences that were recently available expire at the end of August. However, new licencing is now available (at very reasonable prices). For more information about the software and licencing, go to www.tinkerplots.com.

[featured resource] Digging into Australian Data with Tinkerplots

Digging into Australian Data with TinkerPlots introduces the features of TinkerPlots as well as the statistical concepts that are developed using the software. The book comes with an accompanying CD which contains 43 different TinkerPlots data files and 47 lessons with at least one worksheet each.
